Retirement community resident loves a good splash in the pool
Vince is living proof that it’s never too late to get into the swim.
Vince loves to do laps in Clare Oaks’ beautiful 50-foot indoor pool, but that wasn’t always the case. Before moving to the retirement community, Vince tried learning how to swim but never really succeeded.
“Living here, I figured I would take advantage of the pool,” he says. “I went in one day, and there were two gentlemen swimming. I couldn’t swim the length of the pool like they did—I could only make it about half the length. So they helped me.”
With their assistance and regular practice, Vince worked up to doing 10 laps at a time. An added bonus was that the three men became good friends.
“They would comment on your being there,” he says. “If you’re not, they’d say, ‘Where have you been?’ That’s a good incentive.”
Vince was born in Chicago and over the years lived in several of the western suburbs. When he finished school, he worked for a while at a factory, but when he was thinking about getting married, he decided he needed to learn a trade.
“A friend of mine was a meat cutter, and I thought I might like that,” he says. “I was a meat cutter for 40 years. I had a couple of businesses and worked for several supermarkets.”
Vince retired from meat cutting at 62 As he and his wife grew older, their two sons suggested they start looking for a place for their future.
They looked at several communities near their son’s homes but didn’t find the right one until they saw the plans for Clare Oaks, which was under construction at the time.
“We liked it very much—the fact that it’s in a wooded area, and yet everything we needed was right outside the door. A lot of places are right on a main street and congested, and we didn’t want that.”
The couple also liked the fact that Clare Oaks was the perfect size so they could easily get to know their neighbors.
“It’s a smaller place compared to some of the others, and more homey,” Vince says. “Everybody says hello to you.”
They moved into their charming Clare Oaks apartment just a few months after the retirement community opened in February 2008. They took advantage of the many opportunities to live an active and engaged life at Clare Oaks, where there is a full menu of classes, clubs, speakers, outings and spiritual opportunities. In addition there is a full menu of dining options. They made lots of friends—something that was even more important to Vince after his wife passed away two years ago.
“We have a group of widowers that eat together every night,” Vince says. “A big part of our social life is to get together at dinner.”
Vince currently serves as chairman of the Independent Living Resident Council, writes an article on sports every month for the community newsletter, the Acorn, and enjoys helping to promote the community that he loves.
“In the long term, it’s a great place to be,” he says, pointing to the fact that Clare Oaks is a continuing care retirement community where outstanding health services are available right on the campus.
“You’re taken care of for the rest of your life,” Vince says. “I would recommend it very highly.”
