Helping others is good for your health

Volunteering is a fulfilling way to give back to your community and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Now there’s a growing body of evidence that helping others leads to better health and that older volunteers are the ones most likely to benefit. 

The Corporation for National & Community Services, a federal agency that fosters civic engagement through volunteering, found numerous studies indicating that volunteering provides health benefits.

According to a new infographic from the National Institute on Aging, you have only 18 seconds to talk—that’s the average time a doctor waits before interrupting a patient.

Meet Sue Skender, Clare Oaks’ Chaplain

To Clare Oaks Senior Living’s new Coordinator of Spiritual Life Sue Skender, spiritual wellness means that “you’ve found meaning in your life, and whatever you’re doing is supporting that.” That’s what she aims to help residents of the retirement community accomplish. 

Just weeks into her tenure as chaplain, Skender set up a program called “Finding God in the Ordinary.” 

“God is present in all creation,” she says. “Sometimes, in our busy lives, we don’t remember that.
